WelcomeJULY 2008 Hello, Members and Friends, Amidst a torrential downpour, we had eight of the judicial candidates come to meet our members during our June meeting. We also had School Board Chair Robin Bartleman and two Obama Fellows at the meeting. It was too bad that the guests outnumbered the members. Robin talked to us about ballot questions 5, 7, and 9 that will be voted on in November. She is very well informed, and we appreciate her taking the time to explain the questions to us. The bottom line is to vote no on all three. Mayor Lori Moseley, Chair of the Charter Review Commission, will be our guest speaker for our July meeting. Lori will tell us about the questions the Charter Review Commission recommended to be placed on the November ballot. We will also have a demonstration of the new voting machines. It will be another important meeting to help you get informed about the issues on the November ballot. Please make every effort to come and bring a friend, or two. Iraq and Afghanistan update: Iraq Afghanistan Soldiers killed 4,113 533 Soldiers wounded 30,333 2,134 Iraqis killed: 1,225,898 And now Iran: According to Seymour Hersh in The New Yorker, late last year Bush requested, and Congress authorized, up to $400 million for covert operations designed to destabilize the Iranian religious leadership. It seems that the war against Iran has begun. We must get in touch with our Congress members to demand that they stop giving money to Bush for war against Iran, Iraq, and Afghanistan. Impeachment may be a deterrent to Bush attacking Iran. Call John Conyers office and ask them to hold hearings. His phone number is 202-225-5126. Go to Robert Wexler’s website to sign the petition to hold hearings:wexlerwantshearings.com.No more wars for this president. On May 15 the House of Representatives honored Alice Paul by passing legislation to award her the Congressional Gold Medal for her work in achieving a woman’s right to vote. Paul worked for passage of the 19th Amendment that was ratified in 1920. The next step is to have the Senate pass its companion legislation to honor Alice Paul for her life’s work for a woman’s right to vote. Have you marked your calendar for the State DWC convention? It’s going to be at Lido Beach Resort, Sarasota, September 4- September 7. During this election year, it’s going to be an especially important and exciting convention. Thank you to all of our members who paid their dues for this year. It’s not too late to renew if you haven’t. Maggie
